Editing Rates & Services
About Me
As an author myself, I know what it's like to hand your writing over to someone else. I bring this first-hand knowledge to my editing, ensuring that I handle your manuscript with the greatest care and respect. The mantra of a good copyeditor is this: "It's not my manuscript."
The story belongs to you, the author, and my job is not to change it ("I would write it this way.") but to help your story and your voice shine their brightest.
What I Edit
My area of expertise is in fiction, especially fantasy and science fiction, but I can work on nonfiction writing as well on a project-by-project basis. Contact me with information on your project and we'll see if it's a good fit for the both of us!

Note that I do not work on the following:
-
Poetry (if your work contains a few poems, that's fine; but a book of poetry is out of my area of expertise)
-
Political writing (fictional politics are fine!)
-
Erotica, or anything with too much/too detailed sexual content (if you're uncertain, ask!)
-
Technical, legal, medical, or academic writing
-
AI-generated writing (I do not use AI for editing or for my own writing)
Rates
Rates are ultimately determined by the length of the manuscript, what kind and level of editing the manuscript needs, and the deadline for the project. The following rates are only starting points and can be adjusted based on the scope of each individual project.

Before any services or rates are agreed to, I'll perform a free sample edit of four pages (1,000 words). This gives me an idea of what kind of work the manuscript needs. I'll return the sample edit to you with a quote for the fee and completion date.

Note that the pages for the sample edit should come from the middle of the manuscript rather than the beginning, which authors tend to spend a lot more time perfecting. This allows me to give you a more accurate quote and means that we won't have to renegotiate the price.
Line Editing / Heavy Copyediting $5 per page / $0.020 per word
Similar to copyediting, line editing examines a manuscript on the line level. In this case, the focus is on the effect of I'll look at things such as:

-
Sentence and paragraph structure to improve readability, flow, and effect
-
Syntax
- Word choice
A heavy copyedit incorporates both line editing and regular copyediting tasks.
Copyediting $4 per page / $0.016 per word
Copyediting comes after you've finished developing your manuscript. This is the process of examining the manuscript on the line-level to ensure correctness and consistency so that your work is as polished as it can be. I will look at such mechanics as:

-
Spelling, punctuation, grammar
-
Capitalization and hyphenation
-
Style & Usage (I edit using the Chicago Manual of Style)
-
Consistency
I will also create a style sheet for you, which records style decisions (such as the use of the serial comma), and, in fiction, tracks characters, descriptions, places, timeline, and other details to ensure consistency throughout the manuscript.
Proofreading $2.50 per page / $0.010 per word
Proofreading is the final editing step before publication. I will check for any remaining errors in the text, such as:

-
Grammar errors
-
Misspelled, missed, or repeated words
-
Punctuation errors
-
Formatting issues (e.g., line spacing)
-
Incorrect pagination
Testimonials
Ken Courtenay - The Case of the Man Who Died Twice: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure
While working with Amaris Farr as an editor, I found the experience to be very easy, informative, and helpful.
She had ready access to resources for her research, and responded to any questions I might have posed, whether they regarded formatting, punctuation, or phrasing. She was always available to discuss any issues where I needed clarification.
She offered suggestions on rewording sentences or paragraphs to provide clarity when needed, while also managing to preserve the meaning of the text.
She was not ‘heavy-handed’ in her editing, but she provided a fresh perspective on the prose, and her suggestions made the writing stronger.
I would definitely like to work with Ms. Farr again and hope to have her edit my next novel.
