In addition to my editing certificate (Keys to Effective Editing from the University of North Georgia (2021)), I have over 6 years of experience in critiquing short stories and novels in a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres. My copyediting experience includes mystery short stories and novels, romantasy novels and screenplays, and nonfiction manuscripts.

A Light-Handed Approach
My approach to editing is to tamper as little as possible. It's your book and your voice, and my job isn't to take away from that or force your manuscript to adhere to style at the expense of your own unique expression. My goal is trim away anything that will distract readers so that your story can shine.

What to expect:
I’ll provide in-document commentary as I read your story, giving you my "live" reactions to your story, including any questions that I have as I go. I will also provide a separate document with my feedback on the story as a whole. My feedback will focus on elements such as story and plot, characters, and worldbuilding, giving you my honest impression of these things to help you see if you’re accomplishing your goals and getting the reactions you want out of readers.
My style of critique is honest but positive. I want you to know what is working as much as what isn’t working and to encourage you while pushing you to improve your craft. I believe it’s important to respect you and your vision for the story, so while you can expect me to have lots of questions, thoughts, and maybe even suggestions, I’ll never tell you what I think you should do with your story or try to change it to something that I might prefer. The story is yours; my job is just to tell you what I think of it as you have written it.

Copyediting / Line Editing - Starting at $0.014 per word

What to expect:
These two types of line-level editing are often confused, and even within the publishing industry the exact definition can differ from one editor or publisher to the next. Confusing!
The truth is that there's a lot of overlap between these two types of editing, which is why there's so much confusion. Typically, a line edit focuses primarily on pacing and flow, style and voice consistency, word choice, clarity, and readability. A copyedit focuses primarily on grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, and internal consistency. In either case, the goal is to improve the reading experience and make sure your words come across with as much clarity as possible.
My approach to line-level edits usually mixes a bit of both of these together. The best way to get exactly what you're looking for out of this type of editing (or any editing really) is to know exactly what you're looking for and then ask for it! I'll be happy to discuss your specific concerns for your manuscript and tailor an editing experience to address those specific concerns.
